...and roaring winds...with gusts already up to 70 miles per hour... the storm surge from the category 3 storm sent boats in this harbor rocking side to side. storm shutters were ripped off the front of businesses in west palm beach. in daytona beach...police were left patrolling empty streets as most residents listened to evacuations warnings: (gov rick scott) we can rebuild homes, we can rebuild businesses. i just think of my own family, we can't rebuild a life.//this storm is a monster. but some people living on the coast who couldn't get out of town sought safety in red school cafeteria: they were either at mobile homes or vulnerable places. they're heeding the call from the authorities (marlie hall cbs news orlando, florida) conditions here in orlando will intensify over the next few hours... matthew is expected to slam florida all day with hurricane force winds... and then turn towards georgia... the state joined florida in ordering mandatory evacuations...reversi ng a lane of traffic on this highway yesterday to accommodate the exodus. south carolina did the this beach bar stayed open for one last party:

to roll up the east coast... just about 40 miles offshore from cape canaveral.... and the eyewall of the storm is widening which is widening the wind field of hurricane force winds across florida. ............. it's still a strong category 3 storm and that strength will likely continue as it rolls just offshore and keeps the warmth of the ocean water. ........ and keeps the warmth of a strong and destructive storm surge and flooding rains with the hurricane force winds. ......... it's heading right up the coast for georgia and the carolinas later today... and then expected to head out to sea and turn back south. .............. here at home, our clear skies are dropping temps to cool 60s with warmer 80s by the afternoon. incident... we're learning more about a raid on a northeast las vegas property that resulted in hundreds of roosters being seized... and seven bull terrier puppies losing their lives. yesterday, metro police told us the puppies were relocated to a shed with a swamp cooler in the shade. it was running, but not pumping out of water. metro detectives claim they asked one of the suspects about checking on the dogs and he indicated that it wasn't necessary. when a detective did check on the dogs, they were already dead. no charges will be filed in the death of those puppies./// ((sharie johnson)) a reward of six-thousand dollars is being offered for information leading to the arrest of a cat killer. the cat was discovered strung up to a fence post near alta and jones on september 14-th. if you have any information...

((pastor michael jones, believers center i instantly ran over to the man and when i tried to feel a pulse, he didn't have one and i didn't recognize at the time that his arm was kinda dislodged and so i was like oh god, and then he coughed )) ((sharie johnson)) oblivious to all the bo cpr training kicked in from ten years ago. this was the first time he put it to use, securing the mans head, starting cpr until paramedics arrived. bearing down on florida this morning... with nearly two- million people seeking shelter from the storm. ((brian loftus)) >> you can see on this graphic the track hurricane matthew will take... riding up along the east coast before turning out to sea... and possibly do a boomerang back to florida. ((sharie johnson)) >> and i'm sharie johnson. the storm has already killed more than 300 people in haiti... with the death toll expected to rise as authorities search for survivors. no deaths were reported in cuba. /// ((brian loftus)) the storm has also caused a travel nightmare for millions. more than 37- hundred flights are canceled till tomorrow. so far, there are several canceled flights at mccarran that are heading to florida. we're going to send things over now to marlie hall.. who's live from orlando with the latest.
